The location of the scene: day in day out two identical buildings are facing each other. Between them flows the river Maas. Under them lies the oldest underwater tunnel in The Netherlands: the Maastunnel in Rotterdam. The buildings host the ventilation system, the surveillance of the tunnel, the lift for pedestrians and cyclists to enter the tunnel. They seem to be in a deep conversation, have witnessed the movement of people coming and going over the last 75 years and are the only signs of equality in the city between North and South Rotterdam.
The camera shows a first person experience of movement around the river Maas in Rotterdam. A neon artwork by Vesta Kroese installed in this context between 2011 and 2016, gives voice to human experience around the two identical buildings and questions the river as a centre of the city rather than a barrier. A conceptual, sensual and philosophical short story of being present and connected (or not).
"Het lijkt alsof Rotterdam aan weerszijden van de Maas twee verschillende identiteiten heeft ontwikkeld. Door het neonkunstwerk HIER / DAAR van Vesta Kroese vormt het water van de Maas geen (mentale) barrière meer, maar een bron van inspiratie voor een gelijkwaardige dialoog tussen Noord en Zuid."
"De twee identieke luchtverversingsgebouwen van de Maastunnel (architect Ad van der Steur) staan theatraal en statig tegenover elkaar alsof ze in een diep gesprek zitten en tegelijk de wacht houden. In de avond echter vallen ze volledig weg in het duister."
The film, will be part of "Our Tunnel" in museum The Kunsthal, for the 75th anniversary of the Maastunnel (build: 1937-1942), Rotterdam. January 14 2017 – April 23 2017
